“Adidas Kampung” is actually just the nickname for this shoe which is very popular in Sabah for mountain climbing and jungle trekking. You must be thinking, why do I pick such a simple looking, non-branded shoe to climb such a tall mountain? Am I trying to save money? or is there something special about this shoe?
Well I can tell you that this is one unique pair of shoes that kicks every other shoe off the shelf when it comes to climbing Mount Kinabalu. First of all, its really cheap – yes, you can save some money if you haven’t got any sports of climbing shoes yet. Today it’s priced only RM7 – RM10 in Sabah. It’s also very easy to find around Kota Kinabalu or Sabah. If you’re in KK town, you can find it in Segama Complex, Pasaraya KK (which is near to KK Plaza). At Kinabalu Park, you can get it at Timpohon Gate, Restaurant Penataran (which is just in front of Kinabalu Park HQ).
So far, the shoe’s simple yet incredibly waterproof design is available in two colours: White and Black. Whether it’s white or black, if you get it dirty you can easily wipe the mud or dirt off using a wet cloth or tissue – because its entirely made of rubber! And the one thing you can get out of this cheap but good rubber shoes are its SUPERB BRAKES when you climb Mount Kinabalu!
