Vietnamese Food in Sabah – Peppermint Restaurant

We were at Peppermint Restaurant, at Karamunsing Capital – a nice place to hangout for some good food and drinks. Peppermint Restaurant has another branch at Gaya Street too.
Just like most asian dishes, they serve rice with a variety of vegetable dishes, chicken and beef.
The dish above is their Spicy Chicken Rice. I find it quite delicious. If you enjoy chicken, they also have Steam Chicken Rice, Chicken Noodle Soup and Stuff Chicken Wing.
Thai Style Grass Jelly and Vietnamese Coffee…
They call this “Bun Ga” or Chicken Cold Vermicelli and Spring Roll. Something special…
They also serve Pho, Banh Mi Bo Kho, Bun Bo, Cha Gio & Cam Ga Don… Hahaha, if you don’t know Vietnamese you have to go there to figure that out. Okay la.. most of them are servings with Beef…

The Shoe I Like To Wear For Climbing Mount Kinabalu – Adidas Kampung!

“Adidas Kampung” is actually just the nickname for this shoe which is very popular in Sabah for mountain climbing and jungle trekking. You must be thinking, why do I pick such a simple looking, non-branded shoe to climb such a tall mountain? Am I trying to save money? or is there something special about this shoe?
Well I can tell you that this is one unique pair of shoes that kicks every other shoe off the shelf when it comes to climbing Mount Kinabalu. First of all, its really cheap – yes, you can save some money if you haven’t got any sports of climbing shoes yet. Today it’s priced only RM7 – RM10 in Sabah. It’s also very easy to find around Kota Kinabalu or Sabah. If you’re in KK town, you can find it in Segama Complex, Pasaraya KK (which is near to KK Plaza). At Kinabalu Park, you can get it at Timpohon Gate, Restaurant Penataran (which is just in front of Kinabalu Park HQ).
So far, the shoe’s simple yet incredibly waterproof design is available in two colours: White and Black. Whether it’s white or black, if you get it dirty you can easily wipe the mud or dirt off using a wet cloth or tissue – because its entirely made of rubber! And the one thing you can get out of this cheap but good rubber shoes are its SUPERB BRAKES when you climb Mount Kinabalu! Therefore I’m always always always recommending this shoe to anyone who wants a safe journey up and down Mt Kinabalu. Now you know that everyone here wears Adidas Kampung to climb, so should you.

12.28.2011, No Comments, Mount Kinabalu, by kinabaluguide.Recently, I met Uncle Abbie at Timpohon Trail about 20 meters before Carson Falls. At that time, he was tying the water tanks with Nylon Rope, PP Film Twist Rope, Rattan, Bamboo and Machete! OMG, so many items… but why? Well, that’s because he will be carrying up 2 water tanks + 1 cover that weighs about 51kg! He told me it is about 27kg each (a water tank with cover)… :O
He always ties the water tanks carefully and securely so that he can carry it in a more comfortable manner up till Laban Rata… Now, to me this means foundation is one of the keys to a successful climb, no matter how heavy the baggage is (his 51kg water tanks vs my 1kg bag 
) or how steep mount kinabalu is… because he has successfully done it so many times!
So hope you remember this: Strong Foundation can lead to Great Success!

How Can I Join This Race?
Participants must be 18 years and above and must submit the registration form by 10th October 2011 (you still have time!).
How Hard or Easy It Is To Win This Race?
You know how long we normal people take to climb Kinabalu right? Let me see, for the usual kinabalu climbers it takes about 8 hours of climbing to reach Laban Rata. And since everyone’s exhausted, then we take a sweet night’s rest in the resthouse. Then the next day we spend about 4 hours to reach Low’s Peak. Most people reach the peak speechless and breathless. Now for this race, the race participants are given a time limit to complete the race – for the Men category, it’s 2 hours 30 minutes to reach the peak. Take any longer than that, one is disqualified. For the Women category & Men’s Veteran (40 years above) category, given some mercy, they must reach the peak in 3 hours 30 minutes. But that’s not the end yet. They must trek back down to the finishing line at Kinabalu Park HQ within 2 hours (Men) and 3 hours (Women & Men’s Veteran)! So don’t worry too much if you’re participating because most race winners are only breathless for just 5 hours max.
What are the Prizes?
Good question! The first 10 to reach the summit gets a 24 carat gold pendant. For those who finish the race – the 1st Place will be given USD4500, 2nd Place USD4000 and 3rd Place USD 3500 in both Men’s category & Women’s category. And there will be cash prizes up till the 15th place. I also heard the champion of champions (looking at past climbathon winners, championship winners and record breakers) will be awarded the Skyrunner® Super Cup!

The Filipino Market at Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Borneo

Quick one since someone asked me about this. This open market is operated by mainly Filipinos and it stays open till late at night as well. Food – its main ingredient is all over the place, in almost every stall. At dinner time, people would go there for BBQ seafood and other yummies. You’ll find the Lobsters and Giant Prawns more pricey, but worth the try if its your first time. Besides food, seafood, BBQ, they do sell a lot of other stuff there like vegetables and fruits as well, and anywhere in Sabah they are usually quite fresh. I must say there are quite a variety of fish from the sea, from giant ones to the ones that can fit in your pocket.
Their delicacies are also something special for outsiders to try. If you love night markets, then you’re sure to find something interesting or amusing along those tight pathways.
